Leading with Compassion: Meet Lance Schema, Firsthand's DCO in Ohio

Lance Schema, MPA is firsthand’s DCO in Columbus and Toledo, Ohio. His background is in population health, with a focus on marginalized communities such as the LGBTQIA+ community, individuals living with substance use disorder, people living with HIV/AIDS, sex workers, and more. He also has a background in supported accommodation and working with those at risk of and experiencing homelessness. In work and in life, Lance seeps with passion for helping others. He believes in supporting folks who need support because one day, you might need it yourself!

What interested Lance in firsthand is the uniqueness of its peer-based model. In many healthcare spaces, values like self-determination and lived experience are not often prioritized. However, Lance feels that firsthand not only considers these values important, but views them as the most significant aspect of our work. This structure breaks down traditional top-down hierarchy and creates an organization where everyone's contributions are valued.

What Lance finds unique about firsthand is our unwavering commitment to our values. Our focus on kindness, candor, serious fun, seeking understanding and remaining teachable creates a work environment that is truly exceptional. Lance recognizes that the genuine care and support we provide to both the individuals we serve and to our colleagues are what set us apart.

As a DCO, Lance values having a bird's-eye view of the organization while also actively making a difference in the lives of the individuals we serve. He appreciates connecting with the individuals we serve and witnessing the positive impact our care has on their lives. He also emphasizes the importance of teamwork, where individuals and staff members come together to create a supportive and enriching environment for everyone involved.

In Lance’s view, our best selves include our imperfections. He is grateful that our teams are not only allowed to bring our whole selves to work, but are encouraged, supported, and celebrated for it. Bringing our whole selves includes bringing our culture, experiences, and our own mental or physical health on a given day. Lance believes this encouragement to be ourselves helps strengthen our teams and enables us to provide the same safe space for the individuals we serve.

For Lance, firsthand is not just a job - it's a privilege. He knows how unique and special it is to work in a space that you're passionate about. His workplace values and personal values mesh seamlessly. He looks forward to each day and what it will bring.
