Tonya
Guide Team Lead
Cleveland, OH
Before working at firsthand, Tonya was a passionate child protective services professional, working directly with children and their families. Though her passion made her exceptional in her role, it also caused her much stress and worry- she worried about the kids that she helped and whether they were placed in good, safe homes. She worried about each decision because she knew that precious lives were at stake. Her family members saw her struggling, and her husband suggested that she try therapy. Working with a therapist helped her process these feelings and move forward.
Tonya decided to accept a new career challenge when she applied to be a Community Resources Guide at firsthand. She loved the unique model of firsthand, where the various needs of individuals can be met by an in-house team. She believes that this model is especially helpful for individuals that firsthand serves, who have fallen through the cracks of traditional models and need extra support. Tonya has since been promoted to Guide Team Lead.
Tonya is inspired by helping others. Even helping just one person and putting a smile on their face is a huge motivator for her. Right now, she is helping a couple individuals with housing and has made progress with them, which inspires her to keep going.
Her advice to those who are struggling is to remember that you’re not alone. This is especially true if you are an individual working with firsthand, because you always have the whole team to rely on- most importantly your peer guide. Tonya also believes that a positive mindset is important. She suggests that when a negative thought comes into your head, to replace it with a positive one.
Tonya is most proud of the changes she has made within herself and her continual growth. It’s important to her to never stop growing, to keep an open mind, and continue learning. At firsthand, she’s most proud of her team and all that they accomplish and will continue to accomplish together.
