Senior firsthand Guide
Memphis, TN

Stephanie had a very tough childhood, and the challenges she faced inspired her to pursue a career in advocating for young women, though she didn’t follow that path initially. She attended cosmetology school out of high school and worked as a hairstylist. She then returned to school and became a nursing assistant.

Still itching to learn and better help others, she went back to school a third time for early childhood education. When it came time to be certified, the class was canceled. It was then that she looked inward, searching herself for her passions and goals. Though all of the fields she had worked in had given her the chance to help others and brought her great satisfaction, she wanted to return to her original dream of advocating for young women. This dream brought her to social work.

During her social work studies, Stephanie realized that some of the issues she struggled with were actually mental health issues that needed to be addressed. She credits her peers and colleagues in helping her learn coping strategies to manage them.

As a social worker in behavioral health hospitals, she developed a love for helping those living with mental illness. She decided to join firsthand as a guide because she believes wholeheartedly in its mission and believes that her experience gives her a unique perspective and ability to help others. Her best advice for others who are struggling with mental and physical challenges is to first, accept yourself. And then, figure out what it’s going to take for you to find your happy place.
