Mark
Senior firsthand Guide
Cleveland, OH
Mark is a firsthand Guide (peer support specialist) who found his purpose in helping others on their path to recovery. He joined firsthand in October 2022 with a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity it provided him. Prior to joining firsthand, Mark's journey took him through various roles, including delivering packages for Amazon and working in the construction industry. He also explored his passion for video production after college. Mark experienced battles with poor mental health and substance use disorder, and after years of ups and downs, he made the decision to prioritize his recovery.
Mark's journey toward mental wellness and sobriety has been filled with challenges. He first got sober at the age of 17 but later relapsed for 12 years. Recognizing the need to address both his mental health and substance use disorder, Mark eventually sought rehab treatment and intensive outpatient care. Since his recovery journey began, Mark has been committed to maintaining sobriety and improving his mental well-being.
Joining firsthand came as a result of a referral from another employee who recognized Mark's potential for making a difference in the recovery field. Mark found the opportunity to be involved in peer support and positively impact the lives of others intriguing. His personal experiences of feeling stuck and being disrespected by professionals in the mental health field reminded him to treat others with respect and empathy.
In his role at firsthand, Mark is inspired by the daily impact he has on people's lives. His ability to relate to others struggling with mental health and substance use disorders sets a strong foundation for meaningful connections. Mark's message to those living with serious mental and physical illnesses is that things can get better through hard work. He believes that everyone deserves a better life and strives to be a source of support and motivation.
Outside of work, Mark has a passion for music and movies. He plays guitar and bass and enjoys playing in bands. He also dedicates time to his recovery and helping others through his involvement in a 12-step program.
When reflecting on his life, Mark is most proud of his recovery journey. He has worked hard to become the person he is today and finds great fulfillment in making a positive impact on the lives of others. Mark takes pride in his time at firsthand, where he has the opportunity to make a difference every day.
