Cherie is a firsthand Guide (Peer Support Specialist) in Youngstown, Ohio. She held previous roles as a peer supporter, and has also worked to support individuals living with mental and developmental disabilities. She lives with depression, anxiety, and a recent diagnosis of ADHD. Cherie's empathy stems from her lived experience, giving her the ability to relate deeply to others experiencing similar challenges.
Cherie has also struggled with substance use disorder, which she feels was triggered by her need to suppress her depression and past childhood traumas. Cherie's journey to recovery led her to become a State Certified Peer Supporter, so that she could give back in the same way that she had received support. She’s celebrating six years clean in 2024. Throughout her recovery journey, Cherie attributes much of her progress to AA. She continually seeks out support and connection—both in-person and via remote meetings.
When firsthand opened an office in Youngstown, a recruiter contacted Cherie and asked her to apply for a role. Cherie has enjoyed being a part of the evolution of both firsthand and her local team.
Despite the battles she has fought, Cherie would not alter her life journey. She firmly believes that her past, including the decisions made along the way, have shaped her into the person she is today, ready to help others on a similar path.
Cherie has learned the importance of rest and relaxation for her mental health, and is a strong advocate for self-care. She appreciates the need for downtime-spending a day with her cat or indulging in a Turner Classic Movie marathon. She also loves to go on motorcycle rides with her friends.
